FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know before your experience.
GENERAL
What is DARKFIELD?
DARKFIELD creates short theatrical experiences inside shipping containers. You sit down, put on headphones, and the lights go out completely. 360-degree sound builds a world around you - one your mind fills in because it has no visual information to rely on.
Is it scary?
It's not horror - nobody jumps out at you. Our experiences explore anxiety and fear, but also bigger, philosophical ideas - we'd call them intense or unnerving, closer to a strange, vivid dream than a scary film. People react differently, and if a theme touches a personal phobia it can feel stronger, so the themes for each experience are listed on its page.
What if I'm claustrophobic?
DARKFIELD takes place in complete darkness inside a shipping container, so it may not suit everyone who experiences claustrophobia. You're seated with other people around you, you can take your headphones off at any time, and we never lock you in. PLACEBO, where you lie down on bunk beds, can be a particular trigger.
How long is each experience?
Run times vary by experience: - SÉANCE: allow 20 minutes (16 minutes running time) - INVISIBLE: allow 20 minutes (17 minutes) - FLIGHT: allow 25 minutes (22 minutes) - PLACEBO: allow 25 minutes (22 minutes) Times shown are for the English-language experience. Durations for experiences in other languages are shown at the point of purchase.
Can I do more than one experience?
We recommend it - each one is completely different, and doing more than one helps you see the through-lines across the work. Where several experiences are running, they're timed so you can comfortably do two or three in a visit.
What's the age requirement?
Recommended for ages 15+. Ages 13-17 must be accompanied by a ticket-holding adult who stays with them throughout. Under-13s are not admitted.
Which experience should I do first?
SÉANCE and INVISIBLE are both 20 minutes and make great starting points. SÉANCE is more atmospheric and eerie; INVISIBLE is more cerebral and unsettling. FLIGHT is often the crowd favourite - disorienting in the best way. PLACEBO is the most still and dreamlike - less happens around you than in the others, though it's also the strangest.
DARKFIELD RADIO
What is DARKFIELD RADIO?
DARKFIELD RADIO delivers 360-degree immersive audio experiences designed to be heard at home, in complete darkness, through headphones. From DARKFIELD, the creators of sound-led experiences in complete darkness inside shipping containers.
How does it work?
Purchase online and you'll receive an email with a personal access link. When you're ready, find a quiet space, turn out the lights, put on headphones, and press play. For ETERNAL, that means your bed. For other shows, the setting varies - a kitchen table, a living room, a park bench. The audio cannot be paused once you begin.
Is this a podcast?
No. Each piece is a short, immersive audio experience that places you inside the narrative - not something you listen to in the background. It's designed to be heard once, in full, in one unbroken sitting.
Can I listen more than once?
No. One listen per purchase. The shows are designed to be experienced once - the not-knowing is part of what makes them work.
How long is ETERNAL?
23 minutes. You'll need headphones, a dark room, and an uninterrupted window. No pausing, no rewinding - once you start, the show runs to the end.
Can I gift it?
Yes. Select 'This is a gift' during checkout and enter the recipient's email. They'll receive their own personal access link and can listen whenever they're ready.
What headphones do I need?
Any headphones will work - the audio is recorded in binaural sound, designed for standard headphones. Over-ear headphones give you the best experience as they block out more ambient noise, but earbuds work too.
Will a speaker work?
No. The audio uses binaural recording, which creates a 3D spatial effect that only works through headphones. Through a speaker you'll hear the audio, but you won't feel like you're inside it.
Does it need to be completely dark?
The darker the better. Your mind fills in what your eyes can't see - that's how the experience works. Turn out all the lights and close your eyes. A sleep mask can help if your room isn't fully dark.
BOOKING
How much does it cost?
Pricing varies by experience and bundle. Where a city is on sale, you'll find live prices on that city's event page. Our at-home digital experiences start from $6.
Can I buy it as a gift?
Our at-home experiences can be bought as a gift - choose "This is a gift" at checkout and the recipient gets their own personal access link. We don't yet offer gift vouchers or formal gifting for in-person tickets, but you can edit the booking details after purchase to put them in someone else's name.
Can I change my date or time after booking?
This varies by experience. Where exchanges are available, you'll find the option in your confirmation email, subject to availability. Check the terms shown during booking, or your city's event page, for the policy that applies to you.
What's the refund / cancellation policy?
Refund and cancellation policies vary by experience. Please check the terms shown during booking, or your city's event page, for the policy that applies to you.
Do you offer group discounts?
Prices vary by experience and city. Check your city's event page, or the terms shown during booking, for any group or bundle pricing available.
ON THE DAY
Where is it?
Our in-person experiences are staged in shipping containers, and locations vary by city and season - check the Cities & Tickets page for where we're on sale now. You can also experience DARKFIELD at home through our digital audio experiences, DARKFIELD RADIO, including ETERNAL.
What time should I arrive?
Arrive 10 minutes before your first experience. This gives you time to find the containers and get checked in with our team.
Can I bring my phone?
You can bring it, but it must be switched off before the show begins - not just on silent. It's imperative: one flash of a phone or smartwatch lighting up in your pocket can ruin the experience for everyone in the container.
What if I'm running late?
A strict lockout policy applies - once an experience starts, latecomers can't be admitted, so please arrive on time. Tickets are valid for your session only, and lateness isn't refundable or exchangeable. If you are running late, do still speak to our team when you arrive - depending on the event and availability they may be able to help, though a later seat can't be guaranteed.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Yes. We aim to have at least one wheelchair-accessible experience at every location. Access varies by experience and venue, and the containers are compact - so while you don't have to, we really recommend getting in touch before you book. That way we can talk you through the space, make sure it's right for you, and have everything ready for your visit. You'll also find specifics on our accessibility page and in the information provided at checkout.
Are there content and health warnings?
Yes. A few things apply to every experience: - Complete darkness, with loud binaural audio through headphones. - Sudden movement or vibration in SÉANCE and FLIGHT. - A brief sequence of flashing light (non-strobe) in FLIGHT and INVISIBLE. - Fragrances in PLACEBO. They're psychologically intense but not horror - no jump scares, and no performers touch you. Each experience's specific themes are listed on its page. If you have concerns about enclosed spaces or darkness, they may not be suitable for you.
